JFilm - Midas Man

Doors 6:30 PM / Movie 7:30 PM

Our Opening Night film is a stylish musical biopic that explores the life of Brian Epstein, the visionary Jewish manager whose bold guidance propelled the Beatles to their meteoric rise and global stardom. Known as the “fifth Beatle,” Epstein ushered the scrappy Liverpool band from smoky backroom clubs to sold-out stadiums, but his brilliance was at times overshadowed by his own personal demons. Jacob Fortune-Lloyd (The Queen’s Gambit) delivers an incredibly raw and authentic portrayal of Epstein, a world-class disrupter long before anyone ever started using that terminology.  Featuring a wonderfully nostalgic soundtrack and the kaleidoscopic backdrop of the Swinging Sixties in London, Midas Man delivers a wonderfully bittersweet portrayal of the man who made sure the entire world came to know the Beatles!

JFilm - Charles Grodin Documentary

Doors 6 PM / Movie 7 PM

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, Charles Grodin’s amazing life is beautifully honored in director James Freedman’s new documentary, Charles Grodin: Rebel with a Cause. Known for his sharp wit and incredible depth as an actor, Grodin is often remembered for his brilliant performances in The Heartbreak Kid and Midnight Run. A master in the art of deadpan, he delivered some of the most hilarious performances of his career during his numerous appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and Late Night with David Letterman. But in an incredibly admirable twist, Grodin used his role as a CNBC talk show host to launch himself into the role of social activist. He became a fierce champion for prison reform and for the last twenty years of his life worked tirelessly to get several unfairly convicted women out of prison, many of whom were mothers of color with children at home. A true Pittsburgh hometown hero, his life story starts as a steady ripple of laughter that continues to rise only to surprise everyone and become a tidal wave of hope.

JFilm - Elie Wiesel: Soul on Fire

Doors 1 PM / Movie 1:30 PM

Through poignant detail and compelling visuals, this documentary pays homage to Nobel laureate and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel, whose renowned literary influence and human rights advocacy work has ensured the Holocaust will never be forgotten, nor will humanity’s responsibility to honor the victims and survivors. Through archival interviews with Wiesel and members of his family, award-winning filmmaker Oren Rudavsky weaves the story of Wiesel’s life, starting with his childhood in Romania and moving to the atrocities and devastation he experienced in Nazi concentration camps, culminating in his transformation into a seminal voice for justice and morality. Paired with striking, imaginative visuals, audiences are given an unprecedented glimpse into Wiesel’s personal thoughts and reflections as Wiesel describes his struggles with faith, survivor’s guilt, and navigating his role as a prominent activist, which inspired him to write his 1958 memoir, Night. Exploring the lasting legacy of Wiesel’s fight against indifference, the film demonstrates his profound impact on education, historical preservation, and his family, as his grandson honors his heritage. With touching honesty and keen thoughtfulness, Elie Wiesel: Soul on Fire offers a worthy tribute to an extraordinary individual, not only ensuring that Wiesel’s commitment to preservation be continued, but that his remarkable accomplishments, strength, empathy, and kindness be celebrated.

Soul of a Nation is an inspiring and eye-opening film that delves into Israel's most perilous chapter in recent history - a period defined by profound internal divisions, political unrest, and external threats that pushed the nation to the brink of collapse. Antoine, a passionate and celebrated filmmaker, returns to his birthplace of Algiers accompanied by his young son. There to present his new film, an account of his mid-20th century childhood in Algeria during the country’s civil war, he and his son explore the city igniting a flood of nostalgia. Having emigrated to France with his family many years earlier, he reflects on his Sephardic upbringing as a child in a multicultural neighborhood of Jews, Muslims, and Christians. This semi-autobiographical dramedy finds a father and son bonding over tales of school, old friends, and an early fascination with cinema. JFilm - Ain’t No Back to a Merry-Go-Round

Doors 6:30 PM / Movie 7 PM

In June of 1960, despite the obstacles of sweltering summer heat and the violence of American Nazi Party counter-protestors, a contingent of Black students from Howard University found themselves joined by white suburbanites, many of whom were Jewish to protest the segregated Glen Echo Amusement Park in Maryland. Emmy-award winning director Ilana Trachtman reveals the story behind this unlikely alliance which was the first organized interracial civil rights protest in US history. Featuring gripping historical footage and vivid firsthand testimonials her film highlights a little-known moment in US history. A fierce and brave protest that found union bosses collaborating with student leaders and picketers developing unexpected friendships would ultimately give birth to some of the future giants of the Civil Rights Movement. With narration by Jeffrey Wright and Mandy Patinkin, Ain’t No Back to a Merry-Go-Round serves as a timely reminder of how far we’ve come and how far we still may have to go.

Rocky Horror Picture Show

Let’s do the time warp again with this cult classic that takes the audience into the twisted world of Dr. Frank-n-Furter, aka the “Sweet Transvestite from Transylvania”. A mild-mannered newly engaged couple gets stranded in the rain during a road trip. Thankfully, they find shelter — but they learn too late that there is nothing safe and serene at Frank-n-Furter’s castle.

The Junior Chamber of Commerce Players (JCCP) is Pittsburgh’s official Rocky Horror Picture Show shadowcast. The cast was created in May of 1978 and has grown to be known throughout the local community and beyond. They do many events in the Pittsburgh area but call The Hollywood Theater home. The cast was featured in the book and movie of “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky. The JCCP hosted the national Rocky Horror Picture Show convention in 2018 and will be hosting it again in 2024. You can find all information about the JCCP at jccppgh.com or @jccppgh on social media.

It is said Rocky Horror is the first and only true audience participation movie. Therefore, props are allowed and costumes are strongly encouraged! Below is a specific list of props which will be allowed at The Oaks Theater along with theater rules & regulations.

You must be at least 17 years old or accompanied by a parent or guardian (age 21 or older) to attend

This movie is all about participation but we also want to make sure the theater isn’t damaged, wrecked, or burned down (under NO circumstances should an open flame ever be used within the Oaks Theater).  People are absolutely encouraged to dress up and have fun, but there are just a few things we cannot and will not allow and they are listed below as well as when to use them. Another thing we ask is to please not throw things at the screen.

Here’s your play-by-play of when to use your props, as well as the things that are not allowed:

Balloon
Is it allowed?  Yes
When to use: During the song “Science Fiction Double Feature”, pop at the “When worlds collide” lyric.

Rice
Is it allowed? No – Not included in the kit and not allowed. Sorry rice can get slippery, it’s messy, and we don’t want rodents. There’s a reason people don’t throw rice at weddings anymore.
When to use: At the beginning of the film when the wedding guests exit the church.

Large “J”-“A”-“N”-“E”-“T” cards
Is it allowed?  Yes, we just didn’t include it since it takes some decent coordination between people to pull off. You’re welcome to do it if you feel like your four friends can spell.
When to use: During the song “Dammit Janet” when Brad says Janet’s name, and when spells out Janet’s name, each card is held up as he spells it. Some people also write “Oh” “B”-“R”-“A”-“D” on the back of them and use them then.

Water Guns
Is it allowed?  No, sorry we’re not a friend of wet floors, seats, etc..
When this normally happens: During the song There’s a Light (Over at the Frankenstein Place), while they are walking through the rain

Glow Stick / flashlight
Is it allowed?  Yes (NO Lighters, matches, flammables due to fire code restrictions). Get creative and download a concert lighter app on your phone. Those are much less flammable!
When to use: During the song There’s a Light (Over at the Frankenstein Place), while the “There’s a Light” chorus is playing. Do this during the chorus and when they say “in the darkness” lower it.

Rubber Glove
Is it allowed?   Yes
When to use: During Frank’s speech at the tank when he puts on the gloves, stretches and snaps them. He does this three times and try to snap them at the same time!

Noisemakers
Is it allowed?  Yes
When to use: During the “Lab” scene, when the Transylvanian Guests use their noisemakers at the end of the creation speech.

Confetti
Is it allowed?   No
When to use: At the end of the “Lab” scene when the wedding march is being played when they head to the bedroom.

Toilet Paper
Is it allowed?   Yes
When to use:  When Dr. Scott makes his entrance and Brad exclaims “Great Scott!”. Get it? Like Scotts toilet paper? Yeah, that’s why people do it. Wait to toss it when Dr. Scott crashes through the wall. By the time Dr. Scott hits the Transducer wall and Frank has his leg on the chair it’s time to stop tossing.

Party Hat
Is it allowed?   Yes
When to use: During dinner, Frank will put on his party hat, and you should too. It’s a party after all and you should be dressed appropriately ????

Toast
Is it allowed? : No. Sorry it’s a pun and I love puns but your mom taught you better than to toss food. We’d rather not have crumbs everywhere either.
When this normally happens: During dinner after Frank is done carving, he will lift his class and proclaim “a toast”.

Newspaper
Is it allowed? : Yes
When to use: When Brad and Janet are caught in the storm, Janet covers her head with a newspaper, and you should do the same.

Bell
Is it allowed?  Yes, if you didn’t bring a bell you can use your keys also. However it doesn’t look as cool.
When to use: When Frank is chasing Janet after dinner and asks the musical question “did you hear a bell ring?” during the song “Planet Schmanet”

Sponge
Is it allowed?   Yes
When to use: When Columbia is doing her “bitch out” speech and says to Frank, “you’re like a sponge!”

Cards
Is it allowed?   Yes
When to use: After floor show, when Frank is doing his solo number and sits down and sings the line “cards for sorrow, cards for pain”. Make it rain!

Rope
Is it allowed?  Yes.
When to use: When the rope falls from the rigging after Riff finishes shooting.

Hot Dog and Prunes
Is it allowed?   Please, please, please DON’T.
People sometimes throw these anytime they’re mentioned. It’s messy, stains things, and nobody wants to get hit with a prune or a hot dog for that matter.

We want this showing to be as enjoyable as possible so please respect other guests and our theater. Guests who bring in props not listed above and fail to adhere to the instructions above will be asked to leave.

With a music career spanning four decades, Pure Gold performs material from the '50s, '60s and '70s as well as a blend of blues, standards and original material to highlight their unique talent and range.

Starting in 1978 as Acapella Gold, they quickly gained popularity. After a few successful years they decided to add a band and name the group Pure Gold. After 43 years of performing and sharing the stage with many music legends such as Aretha Franklin, Frankie Valli, Chuck Berry, Smokey Robinson, the Four Tops, The Temptations and the Isley Brothers to name a few, Pure Gold decided to retire, and their fans were sad to see this legendary group perform its final show in December 2021. With permission from the group's lifelong manager, Henry DeLuca, an agreement was made to continue under new management with some new personnel and a slightly modified name: The New PURE GOLD. We want to thank all of our fans who have supported us and continue to support us throughout the years.

So get ready, everyone, for the pride of Pittsburgh:  The New PURE GOLD - Keeping the Oldies Alive.

Al Di Meola, a living legend in the world of guitar, has been at the forefront of contemporary music for over five decades. His innovative blend of complex rhythmic syncopation, lyrical melodies, and sophisticated harmonies has earned him critical acclaim and widespread recognition, including induction into the Guitar Player Magazine Gallery of Greats. With four gold albums, two platinum albums, and over six million record sales worldwide, Di Meola’s artistry has left an indelible mark on music history. His accolades include five gold albums, one Grammy award, 12 Guitar Player Magazine awards, and prestigious honors like the Miles Davis Award, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the BBC, and an Honorary Doctorate from Berklee College of Music.

Renowned not only for his technical mastery on both acoustic and electric guitars but also for his prolific composing career, Di Meola has released more than 30 solo albums. He first gained prominence as a member of the fusion supergroup Return to Forever, alongside Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, and Lenny White. Di Meola’s collaborations with other virtuosos, such as John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia in the Guitar Trio, have further solidified his status as one of the most influential guitarists of all time.

Throughout his career, Di Meola has continuously explored world music influences, incorporating flamenco, tango, and Middle Eastern sounds into his work. His group, World Sinfonia, showcases his pioneering fusion of global genres with jazz. From his early albums, like Elegant Gypsy and Land of the Midnight Sun, to more recent works like Opus and Across the Universe, his music continues to evolve and captivate audiences worldwide.

In 2024, Di Meola released his latest double studio album, TWENTYFOUR, which was met with universal praise from critics and audiences alike. Conceived during the tumultuous times of the pandemic, what started as a simple acoustic project evolved into something much grander. Al’s initial intention to craft a reflective acoustic album on the challenges of the time expanded exponentially as he found himself unable to resist the allure of boundless musical exploration. Over the span of four years, ‘TWENTYFOUR’ blossomed into a masterpiece, brimming with intricately woven melodies, diverse instrumentation, and captivating highlights. It’s a journey through Al’s musical evolution, showcasing his virtuosity and vision in those special times. This album further cements his reputation as a guitar virtuoso and visionary composer, continuing his legacy of musical innovation. Pittsburgh International Dance Film Festival (PIDFF)

The Pittsburgh International Dance Film Festival (PIDFF) is the premiere dance film festival in Pittsburgh, PA. This festival features a wide range of dance films from different countries and honors a "Constructed Sight" category which highlights public works of art or focuses films on a site specific location.

The Opening Night Event at The Oaks Theater program:

6:30pm - Doors Open

7pm - Pre-Show begins with live performances from Shana Simmons Dance

7:30pm-9:30pm - Curated International dance films from around the world

"I've never experienced a dance film festival with such a sense and feeling of community before." ~ 2022 Film Artist

"Best film festival I attended this year" ~ 2024 Attendee

"I have so many! Such a kickass festival // An incredibly diverse curation of dance works from all over the world // Genuinely cannot wait for next year's festival // There were many stellar dance film works in this festival, I have a hard time choosing my favorite!" ~ 2023 Attendee

In its first year, SSD received about one hundred international submissions which a panel of 7 members curated to select festival features and the Opening Night Constructed Sight film event. Constructed Sight was a platform created by Shana Simmons, Jamie Erin Murphy, and Brady Sanders to showcase a variety of dance films through entertaining online events. These seasoned choreographers collaborated on generating new films through site specific choreography inspired by public works of art around Pittsburgh.

We consider movement to speak and film to be a lens to see this communication. We value artistic commitment, creative relationship between screen and dance, and thoughtful presentations. We're looking for films that are true to the artists' voice in an effort to curate entertaining compilations of films. We accept and present films of all production values and budget sizes. We are interested in films that incorporate site specific locations as inspiration for the work and pieces that incorporate visual art in some way, but are not limited to these elements.

This festival exists to bring people together across nations with an aim to develop personal relationships and artistic dialogue.

Tammy recently appeared on the highly acclaimed Showtime comedy special, Women Of A Certain Age 2, and has appeared on a number of other television shows like The View, Guy’s Grocery Games: Comics Compete, The Howard Stern Show, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, A&E's Donnie Loves Jenny (twice), Bravo’s Rocco’s Dinner Party, CBS’s The Talk, NBC’s Last Comic Standing: The Best of the Best, her own Comedy Central Presents Special that won that year's Comedy Central's Standup Showdown, and was (personally) chosen by Jenny McCarthy and Donnie Wahlberg to be a part of their Dirty, Sexy, Funnyfranchise comedy specials and touring shows. Tammy’s material is a fixture on the comedy channels of Sirius XM Radio, and she is a regular guest on a variety of radio and streaming shows. Now signed to Git R’ Done Records, Larry the Cable Guy’s label, Tammy took funny back in time with her successful 2019 album release, #TBT: THROWBACK TAMMY, which debuted at the coveted #2 spot on iTunes.
