Constructed Sight Dance Film

Constructed Sight Dance Film Festival is back for its second year running! The ten day event will kick off with an in-person Opening Night Screening featuring works from Shana Simmons Dance company members and featured international guest artists creating an hour and a half long show. This Opening Night Event will be live streamed to a YouTube audience and feature a few selected artists for a brief talk back.

Constructed Sight Dance Film Festival was created by Shana Simmons, Jamie Erin Murphy, and Brady Sanders during the pandemic in 2020. SSD began creating short dance films blending Pittsburgh's public works of art with dance and showing via YouTube to wide audiences. This expanded to include an international film festival through the application process and is a platform for a wide variety of dance films. We consider movement to speak and film to be a lens to see this communication. We value artistic commitment, creative relationship between screen and dance, and thoughtful presentations. We're looking for films that are true to the artists' voice in an effort to curate entertaining compilations of films. We accept and present films of all production values and budget sizes. We are interested in films that incorporate site specific locations as inspiration for the work and pieces that incorporate visual art in some way, but are not limited to these elements.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three voted on films via the Vimeo Online Playlist. Audience members choose their favorites and prize amounts will be based on festival ticket sales.

This online dance film festival includes a live Opening Night Event in Pittsburgh, PA, where audiences can join through live streaming to see Panelist Picks and meet some of the artists. CSDFF also includes an online Meet & Greet Event for participating filmmakers/artists and an online Dance Film Workshop open to the public!

One artist in 2022 stated, "I've never experienced a dance film festival with such a sense and feeling of community before."

Each film in the online portion of the festival is under 30 minutes and in the past has showcased themes such as mental health, environmental issues, humorous personality reflections, responses to the pandemic, and storyline journeys. Virtual audiences saw films in 2022 from Armenia, Israel, Montreal, Canada, Argentina/Spain, New York City, Saarbrücken, Germany, Kent, England, Finland, Italy, Panama City, Panama, Harrisburg PA/Brooklyn NY, Boston MA & Princeton NJ, Belgian/Switzerland, Barcelona, The Netherlands, Winstem-Salem, NC, Lagos, Nigeria, Port Coquitlam, BC Canada, Oakland, CA, Berlin, India, Cyprus, Marseilles, France, Bristol, UK, Los Angeles, CA, St. Gallen, Switzerland, Singapore, Atlanta, Georgia, Columbus, OH, Bath, UK, Belarus, Phoenix, AZ, Vancouver, Canada, Metuchen, NJ, Buffalo, NY, and of course Pittsburgh, PA.
